GOOD FATHER

“For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, “Father! my Father!” (Romans 8:15 GNT)
Today is our Father’s day, and as a church, we are celebrating with all fathers in the house. We congratulate you on the honour God has placed upon you to make you a father. We also pray for those believing God for the same honour, that by the next season of Father’s day celebration, you shall come with evident testimony of your fatherhood, in Jesus Name, Amen.
A famous christian song writer and artist, Chris Tomlin, wrote a song he titled Good Good Father, reflecting on the nature of the God we worship. The chorus says: “You are a good good father, its who you are, its who you are, its who you are. And I’m loved by you, its who I am, its who I am, its who I am.” It captures truly what our relationship with God should be. He is a very good father, none can be a better father like him. Our earthly fathers try their best to be good and mean well, but at times circumstances beyond their control lead them to not fulfilling that role satisfactorily, because in deed they are human. However, we have a God who has given us his Spirit, and as Romans 8:15 says, he has given us the permission to call Him “Abba Father!” which translated in today’s language is that endearing word: “Daddy!”
As we celebrate our father’s today, we must look up to the greatest Father of all and that is the Good Good father that Chris Tomlin celebrates in his song. He is the father who has given us His Spirit and who has adopted us as sons and daughters. He is the Father who forgives us our sins and never remembers them again. As a father, he does not count our iniquities but instead has compassed us with blessings. He has even commanded angels to stand guard round about us. He teaches us all truths by His Spirit, and he guides us in ways that we cannot always understand. He has put within us His Spirit which leads us into all truths. He is the protector, defender, provider, restorer and above all loves us beyond description.
For you fathers, it is a season for sober reflection on how much of a father you are to your biological and spiritual children. Could your children describe you as a good father? This is the expectation for you. If you are in deed a child of God, then you must exhibit the character of a good father that our God is. If you find there are areas where you have not been the best father possible for your children; while we celebrate, take a moment to reflect, repent and be restored to God’s ideal vision for your fatherhood. God bless you and Happy Fathers Day!
